Innovative M2M application from Maingate enables increased operational efficiency of port lift trucks all over the world for Konecranes.
Millions of tonnes of goods are loaded every day in ports around the planet as containers constantly move to and from multiple destinations. At the hub of this logistics chain is often a truck from Konecranes, one of the world’s leading makers of industrial trucks for heavy material handling. Konecranes Lifttrucks is part of Konecranes, which is listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange.

Konecranes now provides clients in 75 countries an innovative system that slashes operating costs and improves the work environment. The system is called Konecranes Fleet Management System, and has been developed together with Maingate. “Our customers have been using mobile technology for remote technical support of trucks for some time. Now we are taking the next great leap by providing the opportunity to get a completely new system for real-time monitoring, documentation and analysis of the machine fleet’s operational aspects,” says Anders Nilsson, technical director of Konecranes Lifttrucks, Sweden.

Konecranes Fleet Management System comprises a central intelligence system building on the mVio platform from Maingate, a GPS receiver that is built into Konecranes trucks and external units such as RFID-readers and cameras. Trucks, drivers and containers are given unique identities, enabling the registration of data such as fuel consumption and travelling distance for each individual container move. Using a keyboard in the truck cab, the driver can input comments and append digital photos to completely document a specific container handling task.

Konecranes Fleet Management System is user friendly and accessible via a normal web browser. The data that Konecranes Fleet Management System registers can be analyzed and reproduced as diagrams, graphs or spread sheets. All information can be collated and presented in generic reports, and is exportable to Excel. “Our Fleet Management System builds on mVio, which is a highly flexible platform,” says Anders Nilsson. “Our customers often want to integrate their solutions into an existing system and that demands easy adaptation. We selected Maingate as our partner mainly because they listened to our requirements and understood the problems we meet daily in our business.”

Easy adaptability is one of the core strengths of the mVio application platform. “mVio is a holistic solution for the industry that comprises mobile communication to all units, presentation of information, operation as well as monitoring,” says Patrick Isacson, Marketing Manager at Maingate. Konecranes Fleet Management Systems was launched May 2008 at the CeMAT Trade Fair in Hannover, Germany, and Konecranes says the first installations will be implemented during the autumn.

The M2M (machine-to-machine) communication market will continue to show growth during the next few years, according to analyst firm ABI Research, Oyster Bay, N.Y. ABI says about 95 million cellular M2M modules will ship in 2013, of which 34 million will be for telematics applications and 39 million will be for telemetry. The remainder of modules will be used for wireless local loop applications, a sometimes gray area for M2M.

Sam Lucero, senior analyst, ABI Research, says of those three application areas telemetry will show the most growth early on. "Until about 2011, the major market growth will be found in the telemetry segment, since it encompasses a broad range of applications including smart metering, POS (point-of-sale) terminals, and remote monitoring and control applications," says Lucero. "After 2011, we expect to see a spike in telematics applications."

Lucero says that after 2011, mandates such as Europe’s eCall will drive telematics adoption. He also cites competitive reaction to GM Corp.’s, Detroit, Mich., OnStar system and greater implementation of commercial telematics for vehicle fleets.

While need for modules will continue to grow, ABI expects average selling prices to decline through about 2010, and then level out. Lucero says it’s not yet clear how much of an impact economic uncertainties will have on the M2M module market. "A few companies have told ABI Research that the economic uncertainty will have a direct impact we’re in the process of surveying selected industry stakeholders to evaluate whether our forecasts will need to be refined," says Lucero.

Karlskrona, 11 March, 2009 – Maingate is one of the world’s leading independent M2M suppliers and has now taken a lead when it comes to quality assurance.

“ISO 9001, version 2008, was newly launched last December and we are proud to be the first Swedish telecoms company to win certification,” says Camilla Cullefors, head of process and quality at Maingate.

Maingate believes customers should see the difference between working for a quality certified company against one that isn’t. This is reflected primarily through continuous improvement being an integral part of every day work. That is why Maingate measures everything that can impact what is delivered to a customer. Every employee is made fully aware of quality goals, which are continuously monitored to control quality performance.

“Delivering quality is integral to everything we do throughout our company,” says Camilla Cullefors. “All our employees are encouraged to feel an essential part of the quality process. Everyone understands that the end goal of all we do is a satisfied customer - and they see how we are constantly improving.”

ISO certification is a vital to international expansion. Today the company has operations in Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands. The new markets Maingate is establishing in will follow the same quality process commitments as today, which means customers can count on being delivered the same quality assured products and services wherever they do business with Maingate.

The independent controller that reviewed and awarded Maingate its ISO certification is Det Norske Veritas. The certification encompassed Wireless Maingate Nordic AB and IMEZ AB, which mean that all offices from Karlskrona to Stockholm, Oslo and Amsterdam are encompassed by the certification.
