Millions of tonnes of goods are loaded every day in ports around the planet as containers constantly move to and from multiple destinations.

At the hub of this logistics chain is often a truck from Konecranes, one of the world's leading makers of industrial trucks for heavy material handling. Konecranes Lifttrucks is part of Konecranes, which is listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange.

Konecranes now provides clients in 75 countries an innovative system that slashes operating costs and improves the work environment. The system is called Konecranes Fleet Management System, and has been developed together with Maingate.

"Our customers have been using mobile technology for remote technical support of trucks for some time. Now we are taking the next great leap by providing the opportunity to get a completely new system for real-time monitoring, documentation and analysis of the machine fleet's operational aspects," says Anders Nilsson, technical director of Konecranes Lifttrucks, Sweden.

Konecranes Fleet Management System comprises a central intelligence system building on the mVio platform from Maingate, a GPS receiver that is built into Konecranes trucks and external units such as RFID-readers and cameras. Trucks, drivers and containers are given unique identities, enabling the registration of data such as fuel consumption and travelling distance for each individual container move. Using a keyboard in the truck cab, the driver can input comments and append digital photos to completely document a specific container handling task.

Konecranes Fleet Management System is user friendly and accessible via a normal web browser. The data that Konecranes Fleet Management System registers can be analyzed and reproduced as diagrams, graphs or spread sheets. All information can be collated and presented in generic reports, and is exportable to Excel.

"Our Fleet Management System builds on mVio, which is a highly flexible platform," says Anders Nilsson. "Our customers often want to integrate their solutions into an existing system and that demands easy adaptation. We selected Maingate as our partner mainly because they listened to our requirements and understood the problems we meet daily in our business."

Easy adaptability is one of the core strengths of the mVio application platform.

Konecranes Fleet Management Systems was launched May 2008 at the CeMAT Trade Fair in Hannover, Germany, and Konecranes says the first installations will be implemented during the autumn.
